What is an IPTV player, and what to look for in one

An IPTV player is an app that plays a playlist you already have. It is not a service and it comes with no channels of its own. Here is how it works, and what makes a good one.

A player, not a service

Think of it like a music player: the app plays what you give it. The playlist comes from whoever you get it from (your provider), as an M3U link or an Xtream (XC) login. The player reads that list and shows it as live TV, films and series, with a TV guide where the playlist has one.

So a player cannot fix a playlist that does not work, and it cannot add what the playlist does not have. What it can do is open the playlist quickly, show it clearly and play it smoothly on every screen you own.

What to look for in an IPTV player

  • Both kinds of playlist: M3U and M3U8 links, and Xtream (XC) logins.
  • Big playlists on small devices: some playlists hold hundreds of thousands of entries. A good player opens them without freezing a small TV box.
  • Every screen: the same app on your phone, TV box, Fire TV stick, smart TV and computer.
  • Nothing to type with a remote: you add the playlist from your phone or computer, not letter by letter on the TV.
  • A TV guide (EPG) and catch-up: what is on now and next, and programmes you missed where your provider keeps them. See what an EPG is.
  • Parental control: a PIN for the categories you choose.
  • No adverts: nothing should interrupt what you watch.

Install the app

Note your App ID and key

Add your playlist

Go to Manage device on your phone or computer, sign in with the App ID and key, and add your M3U link or XC login. The app loads it by itself.
